Extraordinarily prophetic Brave New World is one of the most influential books of our century. "A brilliant tour de force Brave New World may be read as a grave warning of the pitfalls that await uncontrolled scientific advance. Full of barbed wit and malice-spiced frankness Brave New World is one of the most urgent appeals for a reconciliation of science with religion that our age has known" OBSERVER "Equally a denunciation of capitalism and communism so far as they discourage man form thinking freely Brave New World is one of the most important books to have been published since the war" DAILY TELEGRAPH "Such ingenious wit derisive logic and swiftness of expression Huxley's resources of sardonic invention have never been more brilliantly displayed" THE TIMES ... Return Of Super 70S (2CD) Features over 40 major hits from the 70's including tracks by Queen Blondie Hot Chocolate and Jackson 5. ... IRON GIANT (VHS) Ted Hughes' classic is relocated to 1950's America in this impressive animation which manages to remain true to the spirit of the original. A young boy stumbles across a giant robot and befriends him but in an America paranoid of the Cuban missile crisis and communist scares his massive new friend does not appear so friendly to the authorities. An intelligent and engrossing family fable which respects its original text. Although the idea of updating Ted Hughes' elegiac childrens novella to nineteen-fifties America might horrify purists Brad Bird's magnificent animated adventure is a breathtaking demonstration of everything that's right about a good family film. Adapting Hughes' story really a prose poem would be a tricky task given that the fable-like plot is fairly simple when compared to the literary pyrotechnics of Hughes' writing. The basic premise young boy befriends an extraordinary friend and tries to hide it from misunderstanding adults has been done before - E.T. for example. However The Iron Giant while adding considerably to the storyline (without ever detracting from the original) remains true to the book's spirit throughout. Now based in Maine 1958 the Iron Man - sorry - Giant arrives in a time with which America's cold-war paranoia had reached a high-point. As a result a giant metal chap - with or without a heart - causes something of a stir with the authorities who are convinced that he's some kind of Soviet secret weapon. Only Hogarth Hughes (note the sirname) and his friend a beatnik artist see him for what he is: A gentle 50 foot tall steel-eating innocent completely bemused by his new surroundings. Blessed with a strong satirical thread and bucket loads of charm The Iron Giant has plenty of appeal to adults as well as children. The animation combining traditional two dimensional artwork with three-dimensional computer generated sequences (usually involving the giant himself) is seamless and beautiful mercifully keeping it's distance from the usual Disney schmaltz. Sadly despite the fact that this was easily one of the best films of last year it received scant publicity and was considered a box-office failure. In an industry that equates financial gain with quality this verged on tragic. Quite simply The Iron Giant is a stunning piece of cinema and deserves a place in anyone's video collection. Directed by Brad Bird Written by Tim McCanlies Starring: (Voice cast) Jenifer Aniston Harry Conick Jr. Vin Diesel Eli Marienthal Christopher MacDonald John Mahoney M. Emmet Walsh Mary Kay Bergman Running Time: 86 min. approx. ... Beatles White Album Given a double album to work with the Beatles are given free reign with their talents. The resulting self titled album (often referred to as The White Album) is one of the band's hardest to categorise efforts. Ranging from whimsy to pathos and from blistering originality to shameless parody this is one of their most experimental albums. Standout tracks include While my Guitar Gently Weeps Helter Skelter and Dear Prudence. ... Starter for Ten It's 1985 and Brian has just started his first term at university. WHSmith (WHS) is one of the UK's leading retail groups incorporating market leading companies in retail, publishing and news distribution. The Group has 1,464 stores world-wide, 30,747 employees in 12 countries and sales of some £2.9bn.
WHSmith is the UK's number one family retailer selling a range of products that extends across education, entertainment and information. Each year WHSmith High Street stores sell enough pens to circle the earth; enough books to fill a library shelf from London to Edinburgh; and enough paper to write a letter to everyone in the world. WH Smith also sell 122 million magazines and newspapers each year - enough to make a pile 69 times taller than Mount Everest.
The first High Street store was a small news vendor opened in 1792 in Little Grosvenor Street, London, by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna. Today, WHSmith has 545 High Street stores, covering over 3 million square feet of selling space and employing 17,000 staff. Clubcard, the Company's loyalty scheme, has more than 5 million members.
Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery form the core of the High Street business. WHSmith sell more books than any other retailer in England, Scotland and Wales. For example, one in three copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were bought from WHSmith in the first weekend of release. WHSmith promote new authors with their Fresh Talent showcase and also have the Thumping Good Read Award that is voted for by members of Clubcard.
WHSmith's major stores stock more than 45,000 product lines, whereas an average food supermarket carries around 10,000 lines.
WHSmith currently holds a strong market share in each of the core categories in which it trades - books, stationery, news, magazines and entertainment. WH Smith's strategy is to exploit the strength, power and potential of the WHSmith brand to provide the very best service and value for money for their customers, shareholders and wider community.
