THREE KINGS (DVD) - (WS) Intelligent action film in which four American soldiers decide to do a spot of treasure hunting during the aftermath of the Gulf War. However their expedition leads them into the middle of the ongoing conflict unaided by American intervention. George Clooney Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube star. If you've seen the trailer from David O. Russell's Three Kings you might be expecting some kind of gung-ho Yanks in the Gulf type brain-dead action film. You would however be completely surprised. Three Kings is a brutally intelligent brilliantly acted and surprisingly subversive action film. Set during the end of the American involvement in the Gulf War the film follows the progress of four (not three) soldiers who embark on a Kelly's Heroes style quest for a stash of Iraqi gold. En route the realise that the war is not over for the civilians who have been encouraged by the US government to rise up against Sadaam Hussein and are being slaughtered as a result. The film succeeds because each of the characters from the four heroes to the TV Journalist who follows them to pretty much every Arab character in the film (both pro and anti Sadaam) are portrayed as human beings (something of a first in the case of the latter). The screenplay deftly draws comparisons with the American soldiers and the Iraqis and the film does the near miraculous for a Hollywood film in not patronising or offending its Arab viewers. The manner in which the characters develop as the film progresses is particularly satisfying and oddly convincing. This is complimented by a clever surprisingly political plot and some stunning bleached-out camera work. Director David O. Russell is better known for his low budget independent films such as Flirting With Disaster and Spanking The Monkey here he leaps into the mainstream bringing the subversive wit and sparkling intelligence of his earlier films with him. ... Attention All Shipping A Journey Round the Shipping Forecast The solemn rhythmic intonation of the shipping forecast on BBC radio is as familiar as the sound of Big Ben chiming the hour. Since its first broadcast in the 1920s it has inspired poems songs and novels in addition to its intended objective of warning generations of seafarers of impending storms and gales. Sitting at home listening to the shipping forecast can be a cosily reassuring experience. There's no danger of a westerly gale eight veering southwesterly increasing nine later (visibility poor) gusting through your average suburban living room blowing the Sunday papers all over the place and startling the cat. Yet familiar though the sea areas are by name few people give much thought to where they are or what they contain. In ATTENTION ALL SHIPPING Charlie Connelly wittily explores the places behind the voice those mysterious regions whose names seem often to bear no relation to conventional geography. Armchair travel will never be the same again. ...

WHSmith - The Leading UK Retailer. Books, Stationery, Games, DVD & Video...and more!
|
WHSmith (WHS) is one of the UK's leading retail groups incorporating market leading companies in retail, publishing and news distribution. The Group has 1,464 stores world-wide, 30,747 employees in 12 countries and sales of some £2.9bn.
WHSmith is the UK's number one family retailer selling a range of products that extends across education, entertainment and information. Each year WHSmith High Street stores sell enough pens to circle the earth; enough books to fill a library shelf from London to Edinburgh; and enough paper to write a letter to everyone in the world. WH Smith also sell 122 million magazines and newspapers each year - enough to make a pile 69 times taller than Mount Everest.
The first High Street store was a small news vendor opened in 1792 in Little Grosvenor Street, London, by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna. Today, WHSmith has 545 High Street stores, covering over 3 million square feet of selling space and employing 17,000 staff. Clubcard, the Company's loyalty scheme, has more than 5 million members.
Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery form the core of the High Street business. WHSmith sell more books than any other retailer in England, Scotland and Wales. For example, one in three copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were bought from WHSmith in the first weekend of release. WHSmith promote new authors with their Fresh Talent showcase and also have the Thumping Good Read Award that is voted for by members of Clubcard.
WHSmith's major stores stock more than 45,000 product lines, whereas an average food supermarket carries around 10,000 lines.
WHSmith currently holds a strong market share in each of the core categories in which it trades - books, stationery, news, magazines and entertainment. WH Smith's strategy is to exploit the strength, power and potential of the WHSmith brand to provide the very best service and value for money for their customers, shareholders and wider community.
