Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada's two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.

In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company, Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore. Store Review Lois from Chapters # 756, Kingston, ON If you enjoy reading about different cultures and different periods of history, then you will love this book. The author has taken one chapter from Exodus and turned it into a full-length novel. Dinah is the only sister of Joseph and his eleven brothers. This is her story, told from the red tent, the only place in her society where women can be free of men. They go there for births, initiations, gossip and deaths, and to celebrate their femininity. After reading this book, you gain insight into how life is for a woman in a patriarchal society. If you enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha, you won't want to miss it. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 10 1. A Timeless Classic Reviewer: Aimee Rice from Toronto ( Date: 1/22/2003 5:42:40 PM Technically, The Red Tent is a biblical tale, but in truth, it is much more. While Anita Diamant took the character names and their basic situation from the Book of Genesis, she manages to transcend that simple story, adding flesh and vitality, breathing life into it. And who better than a female author to bring the story of daughters and mothers to life? In fact, the very title is evocative of this life-giving role, for it was here, within the red tents, that women separated to during menstruation and childbirth. Although Diamant is re-imagining a story originally told by men, she liberates the characters, allowing each woman her own flaws, gifts and story. “I had four mothers, each of them…giving me different gifts, cursing me with different fears.” So begins the complex tale of not only Dinah, Jacob’s only surviving daughter, but also of all the women in her life, including the four sisters who are Jacob’s wives – Leah, Rachel, Zilpah and Bilhah. Diamant begins with the 2. An essential read for any woman Reviewer: Robyn Bourgeois from Vancouver Date: 1/2/2003 3:41:00 PM Although I am not a religious person, I am passionately in love with the Red Tent. Diamant is absolutely brilliant in taking the life of Dinah, mentioned only in passing in the bible, and explicating a complete life story that is beautiful and tragic and so powerful. This book explores the lives of women and demonstrates the powerful bonds that can exist between women. I fully intend to put this book on the reading list for my university classes. 3. Great Book Reviewer: Marlene from Cambridge, Ontario Date: 1/9/2002 9:58:11 AM I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would recommend it heartily for book club reading. As I was reading it I found that I was continually referencing the Bible for accuracy and was not disappointed. In this day of luxuries, it was humbling to read of the life of women in biblical times. 4. A real page turner.... Reviewer: Sally from Greely ( Date: 5/1/2001 12:41:56 PM I really enjoyed this book....I'm not accustomed to reading "period" novels about different cultures - tend to read Patricia Cornwell/James Patterson style fiction. I immersed myself in the story and learned so much about what it must have been like to be a woman back in biblical times. Found myself stealing away to continue the story, needing to know what would become of Dinah. I highly recommend this book!! 5. Disappointed Reviewer: Elaine Head from Saltspring Island Date: 4/16/2001 12:00:33 AM This book was a selection for our reading group and I was really looking forward to a delicious read, however my disappoinment grew with eah chapter. I had been expecting a well written, interesting perspective on the lives of women in biblical times. Instead, I waded through repetetive, tedious script. Diamant seems preoccupied with lineage. There are very few moving descriptive passages. Her portrayal of love scenes is sophomoric. Most disappointing was her treatment of female friendships and the blessings of motherhood.
